In 2015, Ural Engineering Center completed one of its major projects in the metallurgical sector: the reconstruction of a steam-hydraulic press for LLC "Northern Metal Center".
As a result of the modernization, the press was converted from a steam-hydraulic to a hydraulic drive. One of the main objectives of the reconstruction was to increase the press’s efficiency while keeping costs as low as possible. Oil was selected as the working fluid because of its lower cost, greater availability, and longer service life of hydraulic equipment compared to alternatives such as water or water emulsion.
During the press reconstruction, only the existing hydraulic cylinders and table drive cylinders were retained. New lifting cylinders were designed and manufactured so that their connection to the press's crosshead and movable traverse required no modifications to the latter. The modernization of the hydraulic system aimed to avoid the use of high-pressure vessels subject to registration with Rostekhnadzor and to eliminate the need for a filling tank, which was successfully achieved.
High precision in the movement of the movable traverse (within ±2 mm) was also ensured. A patent was obtained for the invention: the hydraulic drive of the movable traverse of the press.
